“Hello, beautiful,” Marc greeted me as he walked through the door of my suite.

“You’re done already?” I asked, never taking my eyes off the spot on the ceiling that I had been staring at for God knows how long.

“I’ve been gone for six hours. Are you okay?”

“Not really.”

“What’s wrong?” he asked me as he took off the jacket of his tan Armani suit and sat down on the bed next to me.

“I just found out today that my father’s bein’ put to death.”

“When?”

“I don’t know. Uncle Moe said sometime in the next two years, but he’s not exactly sure.”

“Why didn’t they tell you?”

“Because apparently I’m too young to handle something of this magnitude.”

“That’s bullshit. They should have told you. He’s your father and you deserved to know.”

“That’s what I thought, but evidently what I think doesn’t matter.”

“It matters to me.” He leaned down and kissed me softly on the lips.

“Thank you.” I smiled for the first time since he left that morning.

“I have something I think might make you feel a little better.”

“What?”

“Get dressed.”

“For what?”

“It can’t come to us, so we have to go to it.”

“Okay, if you say so.” I thought it was a little weird, but I still got up and put on my clothes.

We jumped in his Ferrari and were on our way. I was quiet for the majority of the ride. He kept looking over at me, but he never said a word. I tried to remain positive, but it was hard. I was facing a life of loneliness and loss. I didn’t know what to expect from one day to the next.

We stopped at a red light. I looked over into the black Chevy Suburban beside us. A sistah was driving. She looked to be in her mid-thirties. She was talking to a man who I assumed was her husband. They made a nice couple. In the back they had two little girls and two boys. They looked exactly how I pictured a normal, happy family would. I imagined that they were going to Chuck E. Cheese or somewhere like that. I was never allowed to go to Chuck E.

Cheese when I was a kid. There were too many people there who could hurt me or kidnap me. That was my childhood.

“Here we are,” Marc announced, snapping me out of my fog.

“Where?” I asked as I looked up at the tall glass building.

“Come on.”

He got out of the car and I followed him. We walked up to the building. It was beautiful.

“Good afternoon, Mr. Perez,” the older white doorman greeted Marc.

“Good evening, Thomas. This beautiful young lady on my arm is Queen.”

“Nice to meet you, Miss Queen.” He bowed his head politely.

“My pleasure.” I smiled sweetly then batted my eyelashes.

I had never been called Miss Queen before. It had a nice ring to it.

“Come on.” Marc laughed at me then escorted me to the elevator.

“What’s so funny?” I wanted to know.

“You.”

“What?”

“Flirting with that old man like that. You could have given him a heart attack.”

“I wasn’t flirtin’.
